Me and my S3.

So I have this Canon Powershot S3 and I decided I better put the pro in “prosumer” before I’m forced to concede that Auto mode is where I truly belong.

And I knew that, this being the Internet and all, I would be able to find someplace online that would just teach me, for free, how to use all my cool manual controls.

And me being me, I DID find it. And you know I can’t keep a good thing to myself, so here it IS:

Jodie Coston’s Free Online Photography Course at Morguefile

This course not only explained Fibonacci numbers in a way I could (almost) grasp, but it doesn’t even make you think up a new user name and password to view the course. (!!) That right there is worth the cost of the class, which, did I mention, is nothing?

All Ms. Coston asks is that if you’re taking her course, you drop her a line and tell her a little bit about yourself, how long you’ve been taking pictures, and what you hope to get out of a photography class.

That’s all she asks. And of course I haven’t done it (yet), so Ms. Coston, if you’re Googling yourself, a) All my life and b) Just enough to feel worthy of my camera’s manual controls. Hmm. And just enough to be competent when I need to offer photos with articles. (And, secretly, just enough to take the most breathtaking photographs the world has ever even seen… but I’m willing to pay for that class.)

My enthusiasm is through the roof just after reading lesson 1, and although I haven’t peeked, I am pretty sure the other lessons are going to be just what I need as well. (If they aren’t, lesson 1 was worth what I paid. Which, let me remind you, was $0.) The course even has assignments. And if you want to post your assignments, there is a forum that is still currently active, even though the course itself is a couple of years old.

I’m sure I’ll have to think up a user name for the forum, but what the heck. I am a writer. I can think of something. Like, maybe, my name or something.

You’ll see my assignment pictures posted here from time to time. You’re certainly welcome to post comments – just please remember I’m a rank amateur and a delicate flower whose natural abilities must be nurtured gently until they bloom into incredible, um, blossoms.

Thanks for posting this! I’ve bought a book on photography and have been trying to find a local course that suits my timing, but never thought to look online!

I’ve got a lot on my plate right now but think I’ll sign up in September.

I recommend it. I still feel like a local course with a real human being would be a good investment, but this online class will help me get more out of an in-person class.

    And it’s cheaper. ;)

  3. Two more good photography sites : Carolyn Erickson says:
