A Rose By Any Other Name

So, as I was rereading Lesson 1 of the photography course, I started thinking a little more deeply about photograph titles. Jodie named her beautiful close-up shot of the rose “Butter” because it the petals were so soft, it seemed like they would melt like butter if you touched them. She says it doesn’t really matter if people understand the titles, because Hey, we’re Artists. How cool.

Arm's Reach

I’m calling this photo Arm’s Reach, because only a moment ago, I was carrying this girl around with me everywhere, hauling her up into shopping carts, lifting her in and out of the carseat, bearing her weight as her arms clung to my neck. She felt securely and permanently attached.

But a mother’s arms lengthen as her children grow.  I don’t know… maybe it’s all too sentimental. But it’s exactly how I feel. The two layers of branches between us feel like all the stepping back I’ve had to learn to do as her reach expands, but the opening in the branches reassures me that I’m not out of reach, and still available when a need arises.

What do you think? Or am I just being entirely too sappy here? Sorry. I’m starting to accept it as another new part of my personality as a mommy.

That is sooooooooooo beautiful. I love it. Now, I understand when people say a picture is worth one thousand words.

awww . . . no doubt she’ll have things like this she can look back on and KNOW how much she was loved. if i were you, i’d print it out just like this & scrapbook it for her. just a sweet little something she’ll always have. i love it.

@Faten - Thank you. I wasn’t sure if I could communicate what it meant to me.

@Corrin - That’s a great idea. Scrapbooking it is probably better than just expecting my blog to still be here when she grows up. :)

It was likely seeing you with your little one that made me feel like posting this.

I like that the branches obscure the girl, giving the viewer the feeling that they’re catching a glimpse of a private moment.

The girl’s arms mimic the lines of the branches which makes for lovely repetition while leaving us wondering what she’s doing.

It captures a moment of childhood very sweetly. Well done.
